Planned for October
We have a few things going on in October but the biggest is our Birthday Party!
We cannot believe it’s already been two years since we opened. Last year we threw a birthday party and it was so much fun we decided to do it again. We are open regular hours, 10-7, and planned a very special day. Come hang out with us!
Author Heidi Bell will be joining us on Oct 3rd for First Friday. You can learn more about Heidi Bell on her website here and order Signs of the Imminent Apocalypse and Other Stories to ship to you here.
October 4th we will have award winning children’s book author Amy Skala Tischmann at the store. Keep an eye on our website for more information on this event and learn more about Amy here.
Speaking of First Friday.
Our art theme this month is Mythic Monsters: Art inspired by your favorite monsters of myth and legend. You still have plenty of time to answer the Call for Art. Please fill out this form if you want to show in store for First Friday and the full month of October.
Banned Books Week
Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, book stores, and schools. Typically held during the last week of September, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community, librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas. - https://bannedbooksweek.org/about/
At Yellow Bird we absolutely encourage the reading of these banned and challenged books.
You may ask yourself, exactly how do I get books from you? Well, I’ll tell ya!
Shop the store! We would love to see you. We order as many books each week that we can fit into our little shop. Each week we get in many new releases and favorites in the shop.
Order in store! We are a small book store with a very carefully curated list of titles but are just not able to carry everything you could ask for. But it’s very likely that we can order it for you. The book will come to our store and we will let you know when it comes in.
Order from Bookshop.org! From the comfort of your own home. We have partnered with Bookshop.org to have your title sent directly to you and we get 30% of the list price. Not a bad deal for either of us.
Listen on Libro.fm! Are you an audiobook fan? We are too! If you have a membership with Libro you can choose us as your book store and we will get a portion of your audiobook sale. Libro explains how to do this here.

We post the covers of our new books every week on Instagram and Facebook.
Our shop is owned by Karen Nicholas. She is a former elementary school teacher and has a deep love for picture books. Her top book pick is James.
James, is a novel by author Percival Everett, published by Doubleday in 2024. The novel is a re-imagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain but narrated by Huckleberry's friend on his travels, the fugitive slave Jim, rather than by Huck, as in the original. The novel won the 2024 Kirkus Prize, the National Book Award for Fiction, and the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.[2]
That’s all for the first half of October! Please feel free to comment below with any questions or suggestions for us! Thanks for your support of the book store!
